ADHD has unarguably become one of the most popular diagnoses in children today. Like Baskin Robbins, the medical community can have a flavor of the week. For a long time, ADHD has been that diagnosis we give a lot of children who show even the slightest hint of hyperactivity, impulsivity, or inattention.
What Is Really Going On?
ADHD is a very real, and I think we have moved past the flavor of the week approach to a more permanent diagnosis that is gaining in popularity. Twenty years ago, we rarely ever spoke of ADHD. Today, it seems that ADHD is always the answer.
But here's the truth. Even if it is ADHD, and it's not always, there is likely something else going on.
Let me explain:
I was recently talking with a Mom who was wondering whether or not her daughter had ADHD. She described an "incredibly bright" child who is constantly running around, talking all the time, and only listens when the threat of losing something enters the conversation.
Now first off, this sounds an awful lot like a lot of children. But, I also don't like to trivialize a person's situation. She was obviously concerned, so we continued the conversation. The more I heard about this woman's daughter, the less I thought it was ADHD.
Could it be ADHD? Sure, there is that chance. But here are my thoughts. What if it's not ADHD? Think of all the words and emotions you (as a parent) experience every single day. How would you react to the world or let someone know how you feel if you didn't have the vocabulary to describe it?
Imagine you are a child again, and you are so excited that you just want someone to listen to you... Do you have that image? Children with ADHD absolutely struggle. They can absolutely be bright and highly intelligent.
But whether or not a child has ADHD, I always see them as a child first. In this case, I am hearing more about a child who has a lot to say rather than a child diagnosed with ADHD.
Bottom Line? A child with ADHD needs the tools, resources, supports, and understanding to be successful in school and in life. I'd like to help with that! Download your free ADHD Essentials Audio Kit today, and you'll get immediate access to information and strategies that will make a difference.
