ADHD Parenting Tip - Are You Doing a Bad Job Parenting Your Child With ADHD?

First things first, you are not a bad parent and you are not doing a bad job raising your child. Parenting a child with ADHD is not easy, especially if you have other children or if you have different beliefs about how to raise a child.

No matter the circumstances, many of my personal clients end up telling me that they think they are not doing a good job raising their child. To be honest, there's nothing wrong with thinking that way, and I bet you we all think that way at one point or another. The problem is most people won't admit it.

As good parents, we often judge ourselves harshly. We hold ourselves to high standards and tend to compare how we are doing to how we think our parents, or our friends, have done raising their children. This is a surefire step towards ongoing frustration.

Never compare yourself to anyone else. You just don't know what's going on behind the scenes.

Remember, there is no manual on how to raise a child. And there is definitely no manual on how to raise a child who struggles with attention or behavioral problems. Just keep in mind, that we are all different and we all benefit from things being done or available a certain way. The hard part is finding out what those things are, and how we can provide them to our children.

Typically, when I hear these types of comments from parents, I know it's because they are tired, frustrated, and feel exhausted from all the things they have tried in the past that don't seem to be working. If only they knew how good a job they were actually doing.

Do you want to know how I know you are a good parent?

"Bad parents" wouldn't be searching for information on how to help themselves or their children. "Bad parents" wouldn't even realize they are bad parents... Worst of all, bad parents wouldn't care. That's not you, is it?

In most cases, there is usually one or two recommendations I can make that will help put parents back on track to feeling confident in their ability to raise their children. That's how I know these parents are anything but bad.
