ADHD experts tells us that the most effective method of treatment is a combination of medication and behavior therapy. Yet despite these recommendations, I meet an awful lot of parents who have no interest in using medication to treat their son or daughter's condition. In fact, one of the most frequently asked questions I get asked has to do with finding non-medication approaches.
7 Non-Medication Approaches To Treating ADHD
Diet
There is a great deal of concern, and controversy, over whether or not certain food additives and dyes contribute to ADHD. There is no evidence to suggest they cause ADHD, but they can make the symptoms appear worse. Focus on eating a more healthy diet with less sugar, and more protein.
Exercise
Believe it or not, but exercise is a strategy for managing symptoms of ADHD. We all need it, but children with ADHD can benefit from getting rid of their stored up energy. For the record, I am not suggesting that exercise will cure it or make it go.
Relaxation
This might seem rather impossible for a child with ADHD, especially considering the hyperactivity and impulsivity, but it's critical. These children will benefit tremendously from slowing down and weeding out distractions. It's a way to recharge, particularly with so many demands on our kids today.
Sleep
Children with ADHD often need more sleep than other kids. Their bodies need more time to recharge and refresh. It's just the simple. Help your child get the sleep he or she needs.
Neurofeedback
The jury is still out on it's effectiveness, but many people have found success with using neurofeedback to treat ADHD. The focus is on helping an individual understand their brainwaves and brain function, and learning methods to manage what brain activity happens during certain tasks.
Strategies
Strategies are really nothing more than shortcuts. If you want to help a child with ADHD, you are only as good as the tricks, tools, and resources that you have available to you. There are life strategies, relationship strategies, study skills (aka strategies). It's really unlimited.
Working Memory Training
Here's another activity that might seem counter intuitive for a child. Working memory training is really all about using your brain and developing new pathways and strategies to retain information. Typically you focus on problem solving and strategies to sharpen the brain.
Some of these are rather basic. In fact, many of them are not groundbreaking approaches to managing ADHD. But that's the beauty of these approaches. They are real, they are proven, and you can begin implementing many of them almost immediately.
