20 Quick Tips for Managing ADHD Behaviors at Home

ADHD is a difficult condition consisting of the primary symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Secondary ADHD behaviors can include, but aren't limited to, trouble sleeping, low self esteem, laziness, worry, boredom, and irritability. If your child was struggling with any one of these common ADHD behaviors you would have your hands full but the parents of an ADHD child may be dealing with 4, 5, or even 6 symptoms simultaneously.

So with that kind of pressure who has time to read that parenting book written especially for tired and worn out parents of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. For that reason I have compiled a list of 20 quick tips for you to use when the SOS is sent out for help.

*Always be planning for tomorrow, no matter what is happening today.

*Be consistent with parenting standards

*Establish a home environment where it is crystal clear what rules, expectations, rewards, and punishments make up your home ADHD management plan.

*Anticipate what might go wrong and make the proper adjustment beforehand.

*Set up a home environment for your child that is build around their special needs. Good lighting, a quite place to do homework, a well defined homework area, and few, if any, distractions.

*Make your response to your child's parental attitude busting ADHD behaviors uncannily predictable.

*Become routine oriented as a parent, leaving very little to chance.

*Set up a routine for your child that covers morning, noon, and night.

*Put away valuables or prized possessions that you might want to keep for a while. Certain ADHD behaviors can be very violent, aggressive, impulsive, and destructive.

*Make sure both you and your child are getting enough rest.

*Make an effort to provide your child with his or her own space.

*Always be your child's number one cheerleader.

*Make a special effort to find the good in ADHD behaviors. For example inattention means having a plethora of new fleeting ideas continually cycling through the brain. Encourage them to develop this creative gift.

*Make it your personal goal to find the things they are doing right and lavish praise on them for these efforts.

*Use timeouts or loss of privilege to discipline your child.

*Simple words which are spoken slowly, in an even tone, and cut straight to the point are the most effective way to deliver your message.

*Always be looking for ways to bolster your child's self esteem.

*When you are feeling overwhelmed by problematic ADHD behaviors take a moment to accept and appreciate the parts of your child's personality that you love and admire.

*Be patient. From one ADHD parent to another I know it is difficult to stay patient at times. But keep in mind you are the rock of which problematic ADHD behaviors must be allowed to crash into and then disappear. So be strong.

*Be realistic about expectations for yourself and your child.
