ADHD Parenting Tips - Why You Need to Run Quickly From People With Answers About Children and ADHD

Let's be honest with one another. Everyone has an opinion about any given topic, and this is especially true about ADHD. I haven't found a more controversial, misunderstood topic being talked about by so many different people. Unfortunately, what I find to be even more troubling are the overwhelming people who jump to conclusions by offering answers without so much as asking any questions.

ADHD is an incredibly complex condition, that leaves so many questions unanswered in the scientific and medical communities. There's just an enormous amount to know about the body, the brain, and the mind-body connection.

I know there are many different beliefs about whether or not ADHD is a real condition. Let's save that topic for another day, but what I won't overlook is the tendency for people who think they have the answers, particularly without taking the time to ask questions.

About 90% of the work I do as a child advocate and ADHD coach has more to do with developing a relationship than anything else. You see, while I might have the answers, no one is going to listen to me if I don't take the time to fully understand what they are dealing with. Even those who will listen to me, won't take me seriously. That's just the way it works.

Everyone has advice, but very few people take the time to listen.

Answers are everywhere, but people are unique and ADHD is just as unique in every individual affected by it. So how does it really help you when someone just spits out advice?

Of all the things I learned in graduate school, the most important lesson was to focus on developing a strong relationship. That is the hidden key to success. Once you have a strong relationship, built on trust, you can accomplish anything with the people you are supporting.

My advice?

Run as quickly as you can from someone who gives you answers without so much as asking questions about your individual needs, or the needs of your child!

There might be time when answers are appropriate, but if you truly want to help someone and make a difference, start by asking questions.
