ADHD Parenting Tips - How to Get Through the Jungle

Is it any wonder that parents of ADHD children feel lost and bewildered when a national poll reveals that almost 60% report that their PCPs (primary care providers) never bother to ask if they have any worries about the mental health of their children. Parenting tips ADHD are often requested as parents try to get through the jungle. About 25% of parents say that they do not even know where to find the specialized services for their children if they have a mental disorder such as ADHD. The children's health poll was carried out by University of Michigan Children's Hospital and involved 1,500 parents.

Here are some parenting tips ADHD:-

1. Plan your day and let your child know what is on the agenda. The same goes for stopping activities like playing on the computer or watching TV. Signal that the activity is coming to an end by saying " just another 10 minutes , then it is dinner time ". Using a timer near the computer may work for some kids.

2. Giving Medicine. This is often a bit of a drama but of course you can get round it by disguising the pill in their food so that they are not even aware of it. If you can grind the tablets, then it can be administered very easily in shakes or cereals.

3. Food Mood Diary. I am very keen on this because you may not have the time or money to have allergy tests done and sticking to a diet (eg. the Feingold Diet) may make too many demands on you. Just by noting down foods the child has eaten and subsequent tantrums or blissfully calm spells can help you to avoid certain foods.

4. Giving the kids a choreboard is a great way of NOT having to repeat everything all the time. Just tell them to check the choreboard.

5. Negotiate. Instead of a confrontational incident which you know is going to end in a tantrum, you can say 'let me think about it '. Better to use a negotiating tactic rather than an outright 'no'. Tactics such as 'you can use the computer after we have finished eating' can be more effective.

6. Anticipate your child's distraction and help him/her by using post-its in prominent places as reminders and also encourage lists.

7. If you are about to blow a fuse or your child is on the edge of a volcanic eruption, try deep breathing yourself to stop you being impulsive. Also teach the child to learn deep breathing. You can stall for time and say 'take a deep breath' and then tell them you will talk about it later.

8. Don't neglect the non-ADHD kids in the family - you will have to make time to spend with them. Tensions in the family and in the marriage can often be avoided just by doing some bonding activity and that could include your spouse!

9. Organise lots of outdoor activities when the weather is reasonable so that the kids can get really tired and will sleep much better and give you a moment of calm.
