Once a child has been diagnosed with ADHD, it can bring incredible relief for some people. It gives the ability to provide a very clear understanding or framework for why a child is struggling. But for others, it can just create more confusion.
Where do we go from here?
What do we do with this information?
What does it all really mean?
And so much more...
For some reason, ADHD has a very negative reputation for causing problems and creating more challenges in life. Even more so, it can really tear some people and families apart.
Would You Like To Know Why?
Once we are given a diagnosis, especially ADHD, a lot of people stop there. It's as if we have the answer to what is going, and that alone will bring relief. But that's anything from being remotely accurate. Most people are led to believe that taking medication or being in therapy will help resolve the challenges ADHD presents. But that's just totally inaccurate, and even unreasonable to believe.
But I can't blame anyone for that. There's a lot of information out there to suggest it is possible.
Instead, we need to understand that being diagnosed with ADHD is merely an explanation for why certain behaviors are present. It provides an opportunity to understand at a much deeper level about what is "causing" the problems or challenges.
Whether or I am working with personal clients, or just hearing about someone struggling with ADHD, I can usually bring everything back to one very basic premise.
ADHD should never be used as an excuse. Instead, it is just an explanation for why certain behaviors or characteristics are happening.
Change Your Mind, Change The Outcome
Instead of looking to excuse behavior because of ADHD, I want you to think about what behaviors are acceptable. Put another way, I want you to consider what behavior is unacceptable and what behavior is acceptable.
The real key here is to focus on behavior, and understand that an ADHD diagnosis simply requires new tools and strategies to change that unwanted behavior.
