When it comes to parenting a child with ADHD, there are an awful lot of people who have something to say about causes, treatment, and the various symptoms of ADHD. On one hand, you've got medical doctors, psychologists, and various therapists and counselors. On the other hand, there are advocates, mentors, teachers, and other people with their opinions.
Oh yea, let's not forget the conspiracy theorists who believe that ADHD was created for one reason or another, the least of which has anything to do with it being real.
Who do you listen to?
As a professional trained in the art of counseling, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, I am a little biased on who I think you should listen to. But then again, I also know that many people have been burned very badly by my colleagues in the field.
All I can say is that you should be very careful about who you take advice from or what material you read. There are a lot of people sharing information on ADHD and parenting children with ADHD.
There are people with a positive view of ADHD, a negative outlook of ADHD, and there are also those who are all over the place.
Questions to ask
When reading material online, in magazines, or meeting with professionals in person or over the phone, I'd like you to consider the following questions:
What is your background or training?
What qualifies you as an ADHD expert?
How do you understand ADHD?
What type of work do you do?
How do you help people with ADHD?
No matter what information you read, please be careful who is saying it and in what context they are sharing it. It has been my experience, that a lot of people truly don't understand ADHD and the complexity that comes with such a condition.
