ADHD Parenting Tip - I've Never Seen a Child Who is Just Struggling With ADHD

ADHD symptoms are pretty easy to write down in a book, or explain as a definition. But beyond that, ADHD and being easy don't ever belong in the same sentence. In fact, there is nothing easy about ADHD as a condition or diagnosis.

It is actually one of the most complex and controversial conditions or diagnoses I have ever worked with, or spoken about.

As a matter of fact, I have never seen a child who is just struggling with ADHD. I have never consulted on a case where ADHD was the only influencing or contributing factor. Yet for someone, so many of my colleagues and other so called "experts" in the community try so hard to fit everything inside the label ADHD.

Most People Get It Wrong

Unfortunately, most books that are written and most presentations on ADHD talk about the condition (or disorder depending upon what you believe) as if it exists in a vacuum. People talk about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder as if there is nothing else going on in the world around this child or with his family.

I just don't understand it.

We live in a complex world that places ever increasing demands on our attention and what we expect from our children. Now, I'm not suggesting ADHD does not exist. On the contrary, I really do believe in it. But, I also believe that children are incredibly complex in nature. That's how they were designed.

To try and understand a child with ADHD through the lens of everything is because of their ADHD is a gross oversight and almost reaches neglect.

Children with ADHD might struggle with a lot of different things because of their symptoms. However, this is just a small piece of the puzzle, and we must not forget all the different influencing factors (that have nothing to do with ADHD) that impact our children.
