Effects of Divorce on Children - 4.6x More Likely to Commit Suicide

Dealing with a divorce is a huge responsibility, There is no easy divorce. With all divorce cases you have to deal with divorce papers, divorce lawyers and child custody. But after its finalized you need to start coping with divorce. And that includes taking care of your children.

Much of the divorce advice, divorce help and divorce counseling for women are focused on how to start dating again or getting over the other person or getting a name change after divorce. Unfortunately the advice always ignores a very valid threat to the children of divorce - the increased risk of suicide. This is mostly due to the fact that children are very likely to blame themselves for causing the divorce and no amount of reassurance on the part of the parents can convince them otherwise.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, Children who live apart from their biological fathers are 4.6x more likely to commit suicide compared to their peers. Mind you, those are successful suicides! We need to remember that there are more than 200 suicide attempts for each successful suicide....suicide attempts where the children are maimed, disfigured or scarred for life.

Contrary to popular belief, suicide is a real threat even in United States. More than 1.1 million Americans try to kill themselves every single year. In fact 1 out 14 Americans knows someone who committed suicide last year. And that number can go up to 20 million worldwide. To put that number in terms that are easier to comprehend...that is more or less the entire population of Australia trying to kill themselves every year. In children the numbers are just as bad...in United States alone, there are more than 132,000 suicide attempts by 15-24 year olds. This is the equivalent of the entire population of more than a dozen colleges trying to kill themselves every single year. And the problem doesn't end there, there are an additional 17,000 suicide attempts made by kids aged 10-14 year old every year. This is the equivalent of having every student in over 15 middle schools attempting to kill themselves.

As you can see suicide is a real threat, and if your child is a child of divorce, they are at an even higher risk. So if you are divorced and have children, you need to learn all the potential suicide warning signs, so that you can catch the problem early on and stop your child from taking their own life.
