Emotional Effects of Divorce on Children

If things are not working out with your spouse and you are considering divorce, then you must think about the emotional effects of divorce on your children and how you are going to cope with it. After all, though the causes of divorce may be anything, the negative as well as psychological effects of divorce on impressionable children have been well documented and you need to take that into consideration before going ahead with the divorce process. It is an odd thing to say, but you need to plan your divorce proceedings such that your children are spared the negative effects of divorce at the beginning itself.

It is a fact that the process of divorce does bring along with it a lot of stress, predicament and all this has its effects on small children as well as adolescents. They begin to lose faith in the institution of marriage and often end up getting depressed at the prospect of separation from their beloved parents. They also start developing apprehension about how their life is going to pan out after the entire process is through and that brings with it additional trauma as well as stress.

It has been found that children suffering this experience of divorce in their family often tend to do badly at school due to a sense of low self-esteem and some of them may even take to crime in order to let out frustration. The long term effects of divorce on such children carry well into their adult life as well and they approach each relationship with a lot of distrust.

Parents need to instill confidence in their children that they would be properly looked after and their needs would be taken care of. This confidence building measure can be achieved through both verbal as well as non verbal communication and expressions and is a very important signal to the children that they will not be left in the lurch.

Though there cannot be anything such as positive effects of divorce on adolescents or young children, if you can handle this sensitive period in a mature and planned manner, the children may emerge out of the process feeling less victimized and may even take the entire experience as part of a learning curve in their life.
