What Parents Need to Know About Children With ADHD

Parents of children with ADHD should learn as much about the condition as they possibly can in order to be able to help their children. There is no cure for ADHD, so do not be taken in by those who promise to a cure if your child takes an herbal supplement or pills. Children with ADHD have to learn to live with this condition that affects the way that they process their thoughts.

Children with ADHD are often diagnosed with the disorder once they begin attending school. It is at this time that the teacher will usually notice that the child is not behaving like the other kids and will talk to the parents. In most cases, the ADHD is only a problem if the child cannot settle down in school. If the child cannot settle down in class and is continuously disruptive, the diagnosis of ADHD should be made so that the child can get special education. By law, the school has to provide your child with an education under the Americans With Disabilities Act. Parents who have a child or children with ADHD should learn as much about this act as possible. They should be sure of their child's rights when it comes to getting an education.

In addition to learning about education options when it comes to children with ADHD, parents must also be aware of treatment options. No longer is it customary to drug children who have this condition with medications that have negative side effects. There are other options. And children with ADHD should not be labeled as having a negative disorder. Plenty of people have lived very productive lives with this condition. It is all about trying to get the child to learn in the way that makes sense to him or her. Therapy is quickly becoming the gold standard for ADHD children. Many of these children with ADHD are highly creative individuals. They have a potential to do great things with their creativity, if only they are recognized as not being "problems" but having a different behavioral problem and way of thinking.

Parents of children with ADHD should also be aware of the many famous people throughout time, people who greatly influenced society, who have had ADHD. They should know that their ADHD children are in very good company. Lincoln, Kennedy, Einstein, Churchill - all had ADD/ADHD. With the right treatment program that works with the child, instead of trying to get him or her to become something that they are not, the child with ADHD can learn to use their gifts for greatness. Parents of ADHD children should be aware of all the options that are open to them and know that others before them have combated this problem with their own ADHD children with great success.
