ADHD Parenting Tip - ADHD is Like a Gift That Comes With Batteries Not Included

"If ADHD is a gift, then I want the receipt." ~Author Unknown

I often hear this from parents whenever it is suggested that ADHD is a gift. I've even heard one parent suggest that he wanted his money back after opening the gift only to find it empty.

There is not likely a more controversial topic related to ADHD, and that's saying an awful lot given what so many people believe about ADHD as a diagnosis. I suppose it's meant with good intentions, but unfortunately it sends the wrong message. It's incredibly misleading, and it provides false hope.

To presume that ADHD is a gift simply because many of these children (and adults) are often incredibly intelligent, creative, outspoken, and passionate is awful.

The Truth

I believe in subtle differences because they often make tremendous differences. While I don't believe ADHD is a gift, I also don't believe it is a disorder, disease, or disability. And if you want to talk about gifts, I believe that each child born to this world has a gift. That's the difference. That's the truth! I believe every individual has a gift to offer the world.

The challenge is finding that gift, and developing that gift.

What good is a gift if you don't recognize it?
What good is a gift if you don't know how to use it?

ADHD can absolutely offer an individual tremendous benefit, but only if he or she has the right supports, perspective, and determination (amongst so many other qualities). But I also believe the very same holds true for people with ADHD.

If you really want to find a gift in life, then I ask you to inspire and empower your child to see the beauty that he or she has to offer the world. No matter who we are, every one of us struggles in life. The biggest problem right now is that so many people just don't understand what it's like to live with ADHD.

Bottom Line? A child with ADHD needs the tools, resources, supports, and understanding to be successful in school and in life. I'd like to help with that! Download your free ADHD Essentials Audio Kit today, and you'll get immediate access to information and strategies that will make a difference.
