Divorce is a painful and stressful experience for most of the couples. Though divorce is a reality that seems to be happening by mutual consent, its effect on couple's children cannot be expressed in words. The impact of parental divorce on children's mind can be disastrous for their growth as a normal human being. As I said above it is a reality in today's world, we must find ways to minimize the effect of divorce on children.
It is always a better option to avoid divorce if possible, especially if you have children. However if divorce seems to be the only option to live a happy life, you must try to listen and pay attention to your child. Following are a few tips that are helpful in minimizing the effect of divorce on children.
o Listen to your child: divorce means loss of a parent for your child. He/she wants to share his/her feeling with you. Do not let your feelings come in the way of your relationship with your child. Listen and talk to your child as much as possible
o Do not say bad things about your partner to your child. He/she may not judge who is right or wrong.
o Speak directly to your partner instead of using child as a messenger.
o Let the child know that this is a temporary phase of life and things will be normal very soon. Also, encourage the child to share his/her views. Do not let the child remain confused about the new situation.
